Parry: Never Weather-Beaten Sail

This motet is drawn from Parry’s Songs of Farewell. They were composed between 1916 and 1918, when the still vigorous Parry had as context while writing them both the Great War and his own mortality. He considered his seventieth birthday “the final milestone”, while the war was - according to Herbert Howells - “a scourge that cast a devastating shadow over Parry’s mind and heart”.

An older man looking forwards then to Heaven’s high Paradise - “Come quickly, and raise my sprite [spirit] to thee” - Parry sets Campion’s verse with subtle elegance.

Recorded on 23rd June 2012 at St Barnabas Church, Ealing, London W5
