Brahms: How Lovely are Thy Dwellings

Brahms composed his Deutsches Requiem shortly after the death of his mother, although he was loath publicly to relate the two. It was conceived as a requiem for the whole of humanity: as consolation for the living rather than to assist the passage of the dead. The melodies of How Lovely are Thy Dwellings (as the German is conventionally translated) have an unusually wide arc conveying a sense of yearning for the hereafter.

Recorded on 23rd June 2012 at St Barnabas Church, Ealing, London W5
